Welcome to AOWA Organization

Today, media and social networks have become an inseparable part of people’s lives. Many people use the internet and social media to receive news, learn, communicate, access information, and stay informed about daily events. These tools provide valuable opportunities for learning and communication. However, alongside these opportunities, there are also challenges, including the spread of false information and rumours, violations of privacy, and the misuse of digital platforms. For this reason, the ability to use media consciously and responsibly has become an essential life skill in today’s world.

Media literacy means having the ability to access, understand, evaluate, and use messages and information received through different media channels. A media-literate person does not accept every news item, image, or message without examining it. Instead, before believing or sharing information, they consider its source, accuracy, and purpose. For example, when a news item is shared in a group or on a social media page, it is important to check its original source and credibility before sharing it further. This is because false information can create concern, misunderstandings, and even harm individuals and families.

One of the most important aspects of media literacy is the ability to distinguish accurate information from false information. Sometimes, an old photograph is presented as a recent event, part of a news story is shared without sufficient explanation, or a rumour is presented as a credible report. To avoid being misled, we should pay attention to the source of the information, its publication date, available evidence, and the credibility of the media outlet. If there is any doubt about its accuracy, we should avoid sharing it. We should also remember that information does not become true simply because many people have shared it.

Protecting personal privacy is another important responsibility in the digital world. Personal information, passwords, identity documents, home addresses, and private photographs should not be shared with others unnecessarily or without ensuring that it is safe to do so. Before publishing photographs, videos, or information belonging to other people, we should respect their consent and rights. Using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and avoiding suspicious links and files can also reduce the risks of misuse and unauthorized access to personal accounts.

Children and adolescents need additional attention and guidance when using the internet. Families can raise their awareness of potential online risks through friendly and open conversations without creating fear. Teaching children and adolescents not to share their passwords with others, to avoid communicating with strangers, to report abusive or disturbing messages, and to seek help from their parents or trusted individuals are important steps. At the same time, they should be encouraged to benefit from the educational and positive opportunities that the internet provides.

Responsible media use is not limited to protecting ourselves; the way we treat others is equally important. Insults, threats, mockery, spreading rumours, and sharing other people’s photographs without their consent can harm their dignity, peace of mind, and rights. The digital world, just like the physical world, requires respect, honesty, responsibility, and consideration for the rights of others. Before writing a message or publishing any content, we should think about its possible consequences for other people.

Afghanistan Organization Women Arise (AOWA) emphasizes the importance of awareness-raising, education, and strengthening life skills. Developing media literacy can help individuals, families, and especially young people make better use of the opportunities offered by the digital world, remain alert to misleading information, and protect their own rights and the privacy of others. In a world where information spreads rapidly, simply receiving information is not enough. We must think critically, make informed choices, and act responsibly.
