Teachers play one of the most important roles in the growth and development of future generations. Education is not simply the transfer of information from one person to another; it is also an opportunity to develop thinking, strengthen skills, shape character, and prepare children and young people for life and constructive participation in society.
Every year, 5 October is observed as World Teachers’ Day. The day has been observed since 1994 to recognize the contributions of teachers and to highlight their status, responsibilities, and professional conditions. In 2026, the 60th anniversary of the 1966 UNESCO and International Labour Organization Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers is also being commemorated.
In Afghanistan, 13 Mizan, corresponding to 5 October, is also observed as World Teachers’ Day, and the Ministry of Education has commemorated the occasion across the country in previous years.
A teacher does more than teach lessons in a classroom; a teacher can also be a role model for students in ethics, responsibility, discipline, respect, and perseverance. A teacher’s behavior and approach to teaching may remain in a student’s mind and life for many years and influence their future.
Knowledge and education also hold an important place in Islamic culture and teachings. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, emphasized the importance of teaching and learning, and Islamic sources recognize the value of those who contribute to education and the development of others. This perspective gives education and those who dedicate themselves to teaching and learning an important place.
Teachers need a supportive environment, respect, assistance, and opportunities for professional development in order to carry out their responsibilities effectively. Supporting teachers is not only about appreciating their efforts; it also means creating conditions that enable them to perform their educational responsibilities with greater motivation and capacity.
Families and communities also have an important responsibility alongside teachers. Cooperation among families, teachers, and communities can help create a better learning environment for children. When teachers are respected and families participate in their children’s education, stronger foundations can be created for the development of the next generation.
Afghanistan Organization Women Arise (AOWA) considers education and human capacity development among its important areas of work and emphasizes the importance of appropriate learning opportunities for children and young people. In this process, teachers are among the key people who pass knowledge, skills, and positive values on to future generations.
World Teachers’ Day is an opportunity to appreciate the efforts of teachers and to remember that the future begins in the classroom and through the efforts of teachers.
A teacher is a light that uses today’s learning to illuminate the path to tomorrow.
