Family is the first and most important social institution, playing a vital role in shaping personalities, nurturing values, and building a healthy and stable society. The United Nations has designated 15 May as the International Day of Families to highlight the importance of families and their role in sustainable development, social cohesion, and the promotion of human values.
In the teachings of Islam, family is considered the foundation of a healthy society and the center for raising future generations. Islamic values strongly emphasize love, respect, cooperation, compassion, and responsibility within the family. As stated in the Holy Quran:
“And He placed between you affection and mercy.”
(Surah Ar-Rum, Verse 21)
This verse reflects the importance of building families based on kindness, mutual respect, and mercy so that societies may move toward peace, stability, and prosperity.
In Afghanistan, family remains at the heart of social and cultural life and serves as a source of hope, unity, and resilience during difficult times. However, many families continue to face serious challenges such as poverty, lack of education, domestic violence, forced marriage, displacement, and economic hardship. Therefore, supporting families and promoting social awareness are essential responsibilities for all members of society.
Afghanistan Organization Women Arise (AOWA) believes that empowering women, protecting children’s rights, expanding access to education, and strengthening community participation can contribute significantly to stronger families and a brighter future for society. A family built on respect, justice, education, and cooperation creates the foundation for raising a healthy and capable generation.
On the occasion of the International Day of Families, Afghanistan Women Arise Organization calls upon institutions, community leaders, families, and young people to work together in creating safe, respectful, and supportive family environments, because healthy families are the cornerstone of a successful and sustainable society.
